An Unusual Retirement Gift for an Unusual Program

The hands pictured here are forming a "peace puzzle." This is an exercise in a very special program I'm part of at the College called Gateways. This effort is important to me because it has demonstrated that young people who have been incarcerated can still turn their lives around and pursue a college degree. National research has shown that higher education achievement is the greatest deterrent to reoffending. These young people realize that this is the gateway to future success in life. Gateways empowers these youngsters to imagine and then create positive changes in their lives.

To achieve this turnaround, we are careful to speak to these youth with respect as fellow human beings. We celebrate their heritage and their transitions toward adult responsibility. We involve Evergreen students and South Sound community volunteers in our programs as peers and educational partners.

I support this Evergreen program in every way I can. I spend professional time as an Emeritus Member of the Faculty and I also provide financial help as well. A recent gift I made came from my retirement funds. I have a comfortable income and felt I could easily dip into my IRA. Working with the Development staff, we made a transfer directly to Evergreen's Foundation and I had to pay no income taxes on this distribution. I had surpassed the minimum required age of 701/2 and also met the requirement of a mandatory distribution set by IRS regulations. I appreciated the chance to use an unusual financial source to make a gift to a project so important to me.
